Moeraki Boulders
by libbynewzealandblog
Nothing is better than a roadtrip with good people, an epic camp site, and experiencing and seeing new things. Throw is some crazy big rock boulders in the ocean, well that just takes the cake. This weekend we set out for the East Coast on the South Island for a 24 hour road trip and judging on how much we did it almost felt like a whole week away, which is a very refreshing way to head into the next work week!
The Moeraki Boulders are a group of very large spherical “stones” on Koekohe Beach near Moeraki on New Zealand’s Otago coast. These boulders are actually concretions that have been exposed through shoreline erosion from coastal cliffs that back the beach. They originally formed in ancient sea floor sediments around 60 million years ago. They were amazing- and being a bit daring and adventurous we decided to get fully wet in the ocean and climb up!
those moeraki boulders are a national treasure – I may travel to New Zealand just to see them. Do you give tours ? Can I meet a penguin too? I want to tour with that cute young woman standing o the big round boulder.
I was there in 2006! Amazing isn’t it?!? I’d love to revisit New Zealand some day.
Kelly – They are so amazing! They almost don’t look real! There is so much to see in NZ- every corner offers a new natural wonder.
Daddo! I can offer you tours of everything in NZ! They are so amazing, and as you said in your email it is so wonderful that they are not fenced off. Everyone can enjoy them!
