Evening Cruise on Lake Wakatipu

IMG_2726

One of the benefits of living on the lake … birthday parties on the lake! There are a handful of great boating operators on Lake Wakatipu, and good thing for that since there are many tourists looking to cruise the lake. One of the most fun and funky businesses is the Luanda Experience – complete with lava lamps and shag carpet! And a 30th celebration just wouldn’t be complete with out a jump into the freezing cold Queenstown lake!

Santa Barbara PM, California

IMG_1678

Our perfect Santa Barbara morning turned into an even lovelier afternoon! The sun was out and we took full advantage. We explored the oceanfront as well as entering into the Funk Zone for a bit of wine tasting in the urban wine trail. From there we headed to the Santa Barbara Mission and finished the day at The Lucky Penny – fitting since we seemed pretty darn lucky with our day in SB!

New York City – Day Two

IMG_0956

We woke up fresh eyed and energized – ready to hit the streets of New York City for day number two. Our legs were just warming up and we felt good about the number of blocks ahead of us. We spend a lovely picnic lunch on the Highline with yummy treats from the Chelsea Market and then spent time walking around Soho and beyond… and it’s never a trip to the city without a stop at The Standard Beer Garden. To complete the day we headed back up to Midtown for a lovely dinner with old friends.

Ski Season is ON

IMG_9409

SKI SEASON is on! This weekend marked the opening of Cardrona Ski Field and I couldn’t be more excited. I consider myself a summer girl – however after my first winter season last year, a new pair of boots, I was really looking forward to the start of the season this year. We headed up Saturday and Sunday and were blessed with blue skies, light wind, and great snow (for the first weekend anyway!)

Exploring Dunedin

IMG_8667

I have now been to Dunedin a handful of times and every time I discover more and more goodness! I LOVE Dunedin – and I think this is because it gives me a glimpse back into true city life – stoplights, tall(ish) buildings, lots of people walking around …it’s perfect for a weekend away before heading back to Queenstown.

Akaroa

IMG_7934

My road trip ended in the beautiful and quaint Akaroa, located on the Banks Peninsula just outside of Christchurch, New Zealand. Akaroa is a historic French and British settlement nestled in the heart of an ancient volcano. While the British had just purchased New Zealand as a whole from the Maori, the French were heading that way with over 60 families ready to live a life in New Zealand. Although it was a British settlement there was more of a French influence and this can still be seen today  – a very cute tiny peninsula town!

Grape Harvest Central Otago

IMG_6722

It’s harvest time in Central Otago and I had the pleasure of helping Richard, the winemaker from Remarkable Wines, harvest his Riesling grapes the other week. I reached out to Richard about helping with harvest and he told me to come on out to Bannockburn and help him and some of his friends and co-workers cut grapes off the vines.

I had the best time, making my day out on the vineyard one of my most favorite New Zealand memories thus far, not to mention the weather was amazing! We picked grapes from 1-6 with a nice tea break in between. At the end of the time among the vines Richard gave me a tour of his winemaking process, including a taste of last years Pinot Noir straight from the barrel! I ended up staying a few hours, enjoying a glass of wine and chips with the winemaker and his right hand man as well his cute little Jack Russell, Jenny.

Fleur’s Place, Moeraki Village

IMG_3850

We were told by many friends to be sure and visit Fleur’s Place when traveling to Otago’s east coast. Fleurs Place is a restaurant situated right on the waterfront of the old jetty in the Moeraki Village (a sleepy little fishing village) . They specialize in fresh fish coming straight from the Moeraki Bay fishing boats. The atmosphere was awesome – built from gathered collectables and demolition materials from around New Zealand.

The restaurant is run by Fleur Sullivan- a true kiwi.  Wednesday to Sunday, the blackboard menu lists the day’s catch which could include blue cod, John Dory, moki, blue nose, gurnard, sole, flounder, groper, crayfish / lobster. Titi or muttonbird – another local delicacy – also frequently features on the menu.

My Kiwi Valentines Day Party

IMG_3015

Last night I threw a little Valentine’s Day baking party with a few of my new friends. We made homemade sugar dough, drank pink champagne, and exchanged stories!

A Bicycle Made For Two

IMG_0889

The Wairarapa is known for wonderful wines and beautiful vineyards. After spending time exploring the wineries of Hawkes Bay, we decided to do something a little different and rent a tandem bike to explore the vineyards for the day! We made it to 5 wineries before the rain rolled in and we were forced to turn our helmets over. It was a beautiful day filled with lots of pedals and tasty wine tastings.
